Palestine in Review: Why the Story Doesn't End With the Headlines
2025 was one of the most consequential years for Palestine in decades. It brought famine warnings, landmark legal and diplomatic moments, flotillas at sea and, in October, a ceasefire in Gaza. For many people it was also the year they started paying close attention for the first time.
Looking back is useful, not to close the chapter, but to understand why the story does not end when the headlines move on.
Humanitarian catastrophe
Throughout the year, UN agencies and aid organisations warned of catastrophic hunger in Gaza, and in August the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the global system for measuring food crises, confirmed famine in Gaza Governorate. Hospitals operated with minimal supplies, and most of the population was displaced, many of them several times.
Law and diplomacy
In September a UN Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, a finding Israel rejected. The same month, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France and several other countries formally recognised the State of Palestine. Cases at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court continued, keeping questions of accountability on the international agenda.
Solidarity at sea and on the streets
Flotillas sailed toward Gaza throughout the year, including the Madleen in June and a much larger civilian flotilla in the autumn, all intercepted at sea. Mass demonstrations continued in cities worldwide, and boycott and divestment campaigns grew on campuses and in workplaces.
Why the story continues
A ceasefire, recognition and court findings are not the same as freedom. Occupation, the blockade and settlement expansion continue, and rebuilding Gaza will take years.
